Driving in heavy rain

As I was driving home this evening,  the rain began to pour almost violently.  Several times I reached the point we all have reached where I considered pulling off to the side of the road.  A couple of times I had that uncomfortable feeling where the tires began to slide and I feared I might hydroplane.  I didn’t, but it made me think about how to avoid hydroplaning.  The following are some simple tips from the National Safety Council:

1.    Drive slowly.  This seems easy, but people often forget it.  Every mile per hour slower makes a hydroplaning event less likely.

2.    Never slam on the brakes or “yank” the wheel.  Slow your vehicle by taking your foot off the gas and gently touching the brakes.

3.    If you skid, remain calm, ease your foot off the gas, and very carefully steer in the direction you want the front of the car to go.  You may have to steer the wheel several different times, again and again until the car straightens out.  If your car has anti-lock brakes, you can use the brakes.  If not, you need to avoid braking.

4.    Keep your tires properly inflated and replace your tires when appropriate.
