Holiday Safety Tips

As the holiday season approaches, here are few tips to stay safe:

  1. Don’t drink and drive.  Holiday parties are fun, but don’t let your better judgment get lost in the fun.
  2. Don’t use indoor Christmas lights outside.
  3. Do ignore your inner Clark Griswold and don’t overload your circuits with more than three (3) standard strings of lights per extension cord.
  4. Keep matches, lighters, and candles out of the reach of children.
  5. Don’t put aspirin in the water for your Christmas tree if you have pets.  It can kill them.

At least four (4) children were recently hospitalized after swimming at the Opelika Alabama Aquatics Center Splash Park.  It is beleived that they were posioned by an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7.  Our friends at Marler Clark have an article about the poisoning that you can read here or read the newspaper article here.

We are saddened to hear about these sick children, but want to share some tips to avoid this type of poisoning at water parks and swimming pools this summer.  These were released by the Alabama Department of Public Health:

  • Do not swim when you have diarrhea.
  • Avoid swallowing water when swimming or playing in lakes, ponds, streams, swimming pools and backyard “kiddie” pools.
  • Shower with soap before swimming and wash your hands after using the toilet or changing diapers. Germs on your body end up in the water.
  • Take your children on bathroom breaks or check diapers often.
  • Change diapers in a bathroom or a diaper-changing area and not at poolside.
  • Wash your children thoroughly with soap and water before they go swimming.
